Taking top spot at the Korean box office with over 3 million admissions to date, the finance-themed drama Default explores the 1997 Asian financial crisis, its impact on Korea and the country’s subsequent US$58 billion bailout by the International Monetary Fund. Incorporating views from three different perspectives, the gripping drama which conveys the oft-forgotten traumas of the crisis boasts a stellar cast including Kim Hye-soo (Familyhood, 2016), Yoo Ah-in (Burning, 2018) and Huh Joon-ho (Silmido, 2003) alongside the award-winning French actor, Vincent Cassel (Black Swan, 2010).


The Bank of Korea’s Monetary Policy Manager Si-hyun (Kim) predicts a massive national financial crisis and reports it to her superiors. Ten days later, the bank’s senior management schedule an emergency summit but do so without notifying the public of the grave situation facing the country. Si-hyun urges for the crisis to be made public but her plea is ignored and the meeting is held behind closed doors.


Financial consultant Jung-hak (Yoo) notices the hemorrhage of foreign funds from financial markets and learns that international firms have ordered an all-out investment withdrawal from the country.  Resigning from his position at the bank, he plans to play the odds on what he’s sure is a coming crisis. And he secretly starts gathering investors willing to do the same.


Family man Gap-su (Huh) runs a small tableware factory. Eager to obtain a contract from a large department store and oblivious to the looming financial crisis, he accepts a promissory note as a substitute for cash payment.  Soon after, the financial upheaval becomes reality and the store goes into bankruptcy leaving Gap-su unable to pay his creditors.
