Phantom Detective

(탐정 홍길동: 사라진 마을)

After making a splash with End of Animalfollowed by the box office winner A Werewolf Boy, Jo Sung-hee returns to the director’s chair with the powerfully evocative Phantom Detective. A  superbly stylish thriller boasting opulent visuals and meticulous production design, this impeccable drama sees the award-winning Lee Je-hoon headline as an emotionally scarred  private detective drawn into a much larger case whilst tracking down a murderer.

Private detective Hong Gil-dong (Lee) has one goal in life: to find the person who murdered his mother and exact revenge. It’s been 20 years since he witnessed her death and he finally has a name – Kim Byung-duk (Park Geun-hyung). Tracking Kim down to a shack in the country, it appears someone got there before him, removing him from his home and leaving behind his two young granddaughters to fend for themselves. The girls become Hong’s unlikeliest of sidekicks as he once again closes in on Kim and the shadowy criminal organisation that took him. But in order to seek retribution, Hong must first confront the dark secrets of the kidnappers who appear to have high level connections to government and industry.
