Eating Women

2018 (21st) Shanghai International Film Festival

Based on the novel of the same name by Tomomi Tsutsui, director Jiro Shono’s (Time Lost, Time Found) tale of the correlation between food and dating boasts a stellar cast including Kyoko Koizumi (Tokyo Sonata) and the multi-talented singer and actress Atsuko Maeda from the phenomenally popular all-girl group AKB48.

A group of female friends frequently gather at an old, traditional house in Tokyo which is owned by a writer who runs a used bookstore from her home and spends her days cooking up deliciously simple dishes. The friends are eclectic to say the least: an editor trying to avoid men; a restauranteur with a dangerous addiction to young men; a wife whose husband left her simply because she can’t cook; a television producer bored with her doting boyfriend. What they all have in common, however, is a passion for good food and the joy it brings them in relieving the stresses of daily life.
