Birthday Wishes

(バースデーカード)

Synopsis:

Writer and director Yasuhiro Yoshida (Leaving on the 15th Spring, Enoshima Prizm) weaves a sentimental story of self discovery and nostalgia, with the help of a strong cast headed up by Ai Hashimoto (Confessions) and Aoi Miyazaki (The Great Passage).

Shy, young Noriko (Hashimoto) finds her small world is turned upside down when her mother is diagnosed with a terminal illness. Learning she does not have much time left, Yoshie (Miyazaki) promises her children that she will send them birthday letters every year until they both turn 20. Not long afterward, Yoshie passes away.

As promised, Noriko and her brother each receive correspondence from Yoshie. In her last letter, when Noriko turns 20, she receives an answer to her question from a decade previous: “Mom, are you leading your dream life? Are you happy?”

Over the years, Yoshie’s letters have given Noriko a chance to transform herself through various encounters and experiences. But there's still one more lesson to be learned - Yoshie still has a final surprise for Noriko.
