‘Meshiya’ is a small one-man, counter-only operation, where Master (Kaoru Kobayashi) serves up good food in a comfortably informal atmosphere. Among them is the literary editor Noriko (Aoba Kawai), who always mysteriously dresses up in mourning attire to relieve work-related stress. Celebrations are in order for her when her most difficult writer client finally passes away, and she meets a fetching visitor at the funeral (Koichi Sato). Little does she know of this attractive stranger’s real profession!

The widow Seiko Takagi (Midoriko Kimura) is the owner of a soba noodle restaurant nearby Meshiya. Though she is unable to convince her young son Seita (Sokuke Ikematsu) to take over her business, she still has her faithful customer, Saori Kimura (Hijiri Kojima). Meanwhile, Seita and Saori, who is 15 years Seita’s senior, are secretly in love!

One night, the gang at Meshiya discover the elderly Yukiko Ogawa (Misako Watanabe) has been tricked by swindlers into journeying to Tokyo from distant Kyushu, under the pretense that her son is in desperate need of money. Sympathetic to her plight, the regulars take her under their wing and team up to help after her brother-in-law (Hisashi Igawa) reveals why she seems so hesitant to contact her son.

Everyone has a story. All through the year they come to taste Master’s down-home cooking and leave the Midnight Diner refreshed and full.
