The Sea of Seiro: Detective Mitarai's Casebookh

(探偵ミタライの事件簿星籠の海)

Synopsis:

Based on the 2013 novel “Sea of Hoshikago: The Clockwork Current” by mystery author Soji Shimada, this hit story brought to the big screen is a Japanese take on the Sherlock Holmes genre. With deft storytelling skills, veteran director Seiji Izumi paints a compelling tale starring Kiyoshi Mitarai—a university lecturer, astrologer, fortune-teller and detective, better known as the “brain scientist”.

The story opens on a small island in the Seto Inland Sea, where six unidentified bodies have washed ashore in a span of six months. Brilliant detective Kiyoshi Mitarai (Hiroshi Tamaki) deduces that the bodies had been dumped near Fukuyama and then carried by currents, known as the Clockwork Sea. As Mitarai heads to Fukuyama, the likely source of the bodies’ abandonment, he encounters a new series of freakish cases with more gruesome results, including a family kidnapping and a child murder.

At the same time, associate professor Kanako Takizawa (Hikari Ishida) from Fukuyama’s local college encounters a series of strange incidents, which coincide with her investigation of a centuries-old unearthed manuscript……
