Your Name

Up-and-coming animation director Makoto Shinkai teams up with Masayoshi Tanaka, character designer for “Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day” (box office gross over 10 million), to bring an exciting new addition to the youth science fiction fantasy genre. “Your Name.” is a moving, sci-fi romance that reaches across time, space and gender to connect with unlikely minds, and is the first non-Ghibli non-series-based anime movie to gross over 10 billion yen.

Urban high schooler Taki (Ryunosuke Kamiki) wakes up from a dream to find himself in a strange new room and a new body – as a girl! Meanwhile, Mitsuha (Mone Kamishiraishi) awakens to discover she is no longer living her mundane, countryside life as an ordinary high schooler, but that she has inhabited handsome Taki’s body in a bizarre swap. Again and again, the mysterious pattern repeats daily, where each person switches bodies as soon as they fall asleep. The two confused teens fumble about, unaccustomed to each other’s bodies, but start communicating by memo. Soon, it becomes an amusing game to live each other’s lives for brief periods as they leave each other notes and even quarrel.

As they awkwardly overcome one challenge after another, a bond develops between the two, one that evolves into something more romantic. One day, Taki sets out to find Mitsuha in person, only to discover that she and her entire village were wiped out in a natural disaster few years ago. Not knowing what is reality anymore, Taki embarks on a solo adventure to reconnect with Mitsuha and warn her about an impending falling asteroid that threatens her village. Will their close personal bond be able to overcome time and space to exist against all odds?
