With its mix of comedy and interlocking crime stories A Cool Fish makes more than a nod to many of Quentin Tarantino’s films. Directed by Rao Xiaozhi (The Insanity), the bold entertainer stars Chen Jianbin (Empresses in the Palace, Three Kingdoms), Ren Suxi (Mr. Donkey, Absurd Accident) and Pan Binlong (Detective Chinatown, Kung Fu Monster).

The film starts with a pair of bungling robbers, Cobra (Zhang) and Big Head (Pan) fleeing on a motorcycle after ineptly holding up a mobile phone store at gunpoint. When their motorcycle ends up in a tree they race off on foot, eventually taking refuge in the flat of a foul-mouthed quadriplegic Jiaqi (Ren) who quickly sees through the pair’s bluster. Meanwhile, across town a policeman-turned-security guard – and Jiaqi’s brother – Ma Xiangyong (Chen) faces the ultimate challenge when his boss mysteriously disappears and his paralysed sister makes a morbid deal with the armed bandits.
