The Wasted Times

In a non-linear story that spans over several decades, this film about the Sino-Japanese war traverses between Shanghai, Hong Kong and the Philippines and is helmed by the director of “Lethal Hostage”, Cheng Er. This thrilling story is based on the life of the legendary Shanghainese mob boss, “Big Ears” Du Yuesheng, during the tumultuous times in pre-World-War-II China.

Love, hatred, and betrayal abound in Shanghai during the chaotic, war-torn 1930s. The ruthless gangster Mr. Lu (Ge You) is ambushed during an important meeting with the Japanese army, but his sister’s husband, Watabe (Tadanobu Asano, “Thor: The Dark World”), sacrifices himself to save Mr. Lu. Years later as the war comes to a close, Mr. Lu visits the abandoned wife of his former boss, Mrs. Wang, who was once an alluring Shanghainese film actress (Zhang Ziyi). To Mr. Lu’s shock, she reveals that Watabe is still alive and did not sacrifice himself to save Mr Lu. In fact, he was actually an opposition forces spy, who was responsible for the deaths of his family members and held Mrs. Wang captive in his basement. Given this new revelation, Mr. Lu takes Mrs. Wang to the war camp where Watabe is held, so that they could finally make him pay for his sins.
