One Night Only

This directorial debut by the Taiwanese actor Matt Wu boasts a career-best performance from Aaron Kwok, who plays an ever optimistic, down-on-his-luck compulsive gambler.

After years of incarceration, hopeless gambling addict Gao Ye (Kwok) walks out from prison to an even crueler world. Having lost his entire fortune and his loved ones because of his addiction, Gao Ye finds himself unexpectedly being visited in his hotel room by a beautiful escort, Mo Mo (Yang Zishan). Mo Mo explains that she conveniently needs a client to help her kill time and Gao Ye notices that she has a large sum of cash in her purse. Feeling that he is once again back on his feet, Gao Ye hatches a grand plan to redeem all that he had lost.

Instead of paying Mo Mo for her time, Gao Ye coerces her into visiting a black market underground boxing venue with him, using her prodigious amount of cash as gambling capital. She reluctantly agrees to his scheme, but before they can escape, they find they have become pawns sucked into a scheme set up by the underground world. As they manoeuvre through a tumultuous spree filled with kidnapping, car-racing and homicide, they attempt to evade an unhinged gambling rival and make it through the long, long night.
