Synopsis:

Selected as closing film of the Fantasia International Film Festival, director Jang Hoon’s “A Taxi Driver” was one of Korea’s most-anticipated films of the year and since its release has won rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. Based on a true story, Song Kang-ho takes the lead in this powerful drama depicting the story of the late Jürgen Hinzpeter, a German journalist who filmed South Korea’s brutal military crackdown of 1980. Veteran actor Song has won numerous awards for his previous film, “The Age of Shadows”, including Best Actor at the 8th KOFRA Film Awards, Grand Prize (Daesang) at the 6th SACF Artists of the Year Awards and Best Actor for Film at the 53rd Baeksang Arts Awards.

May 1980, Seoul. Man-seob (Song) is a taxi driver who lives from hand to mouth. He’s raising his young daughter alone after his wife passed away, leaving behind large hospital bills.

One day he learns that there is a foreigner who’s willing to pay big money for a drive down to Gwangju city and back. Man-soeb however is not aware that the foreigner is a German journalist Jürgen Hinzpeter who is investigating rumours of an uprising in the south of the country. In need of the cash, Man-soeb takes the job but on arrival finds himself plunged into danger in a city under siege by pro-democracy protestors and the military.
