Synopsis:

Award-winning veteran filmmaker Daisaku Kimura, having worked with legendary director Akira Kurosawa on Yojimboand Sanjuro, directs his first samurai drama in Samurai’s Promise, about brotherhood, greed and corruption in the 18thcentury Japan.

1731. Samurai Shinbei (Okada) is exiled from his clan after denouncing a high-ranking officer corrupt. That officer is later murdered and suspicion falls on Shinbei. Both Shinbei and his friend Uneme (Nishijima) had been courting Shino (Aso), but when her family denies Uneme permission to wed their daughter, Shino marries Shinbei instead. The harsh conditions in exile place a toll on Shino’s health and on her deathbed she makes her husband promise to return to their village and reconcile with Uneme. After Shino’s passing he starts on this journey, but is soon embroiled in clan politics….
