Synopsis:

Last Letteris a tastefully sentimental Chinese-language film debut by Japanese auteur Shunji Iwai. Produced by Hong Kong’s Peter Chan (Perhaps Love, 2005), this beautifully-lensed production stars Zhou Xun (Suzhou River, 1998), one of the most bankable actresses in China, alongside Qin Hao (Blind Massage, 2014). A compelling story about regret, loss and healing, Last Letter received nods in 3 categories at the 55th Golden Horse Awards - Best Leading Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay. The pic was also selected as closing film at the 2018 Hong Kong Asian Film Festival.

When an invitation to a school reunion arrives for the recently deceased Chi Nam, sister Chi Wah (Zhou) decides to attend the gathering with the intention of informing former classmates of Chi Nam’s recent passing.  Unfortunately, with everyone gathered before her she’s unable to convey the sad news and instead is mistaken for Chi Nam, including by struggling novelist Wan Chuen (Qin) who had a schoolboy crush on Chi Nam.

Seeking to renew their acquaintance, Wan Cheun suggests they exchange contact details, a dilemma for Chi Wah as she had once harboured deep feelings for him that were crushed when she realised he was in love with her sister. Nonetheless, she begins corresponding with him under the guise of Chi Nam.  Soon however, the cathartic handwritten confessionals lead to complications when daughter Saran (Zhang) and Chi Nam’s daughter, Mumu (Deng), learn about the exchange...
