Home

(家)

Synopsis:
Home. There is no place like it anywhere in the world.
There are mud huts in the grasslands, bamboo houses over water, wooden structures nestled in the mountains. Even in the loess, a dugout will do. Only when built to fit the natural conditions of its locality is a home apt for residence. It is culture, however, that endows a home with a certain style. The foundations, beams, eaves, doors and windows show us the practicalities and aesthetics that define a particular people. Blending history, geography and culture, a home interacts intimately with the household within, each co-existing and resonating with the other.

Home looks at traditional dwellings in Singapore, China, India, Japan and Korea. It explores how architecture and furnishings reflect the local geography, climate and customs. It witnesses how a resident's way of living embodies notions about homes and the hopes and ideals that people hold.

Exploring a variety of residences, Home unfurls the Asian family's philosophies of living and environment.
