My First Client

(어린 의뢰인)

In 2013 Koreans were incensed by the news that a woman killed her stepdaughter and forced the girl’s sister to confess to the murder. It is this shocking case of child abuse that director Jang Kyu-sung (Small Town Rivals, My Teacher, Mr. Kim) – who is best known for comedies – bases My First Client. The film features Lee Dong-hwi (The Handmaiden, The Beauty Inside), Yoo Sun (Moss, Black House) and Choi Myeong-bin (Chicago Typewriter, Black).

After graduating from law school Jung-yeop (Lee Dong-hwi) has trouble finding a job so starts working temporarily at a youth welfare centre. There he meets and helps Da-bin (Choi) and her brother Min-jun (Lee Joo-won) who have been abused by their stepmother Ji-sook (Yoo). Jung-yeop finally finds a job at a law firm but soon afterwards Da-bin calls to tell him of continued abuse. Matters escalate when he learns that Min-jun has died and Da-bin is accused of killing him. Shocked and determined to get to the truth, Jung-yeop takes on his first case as Da-bin’s lawyer.
