Veteran of the comedy genre Shinobu Yaguhi returns with his latest directorial offering Survival Family, a slick, family-friendly tale which has seen excellent returns at the box office. Boasting an elite cast including Fumiyo Kohinata, Eri Fukatsu, Yuki Izumisawa and Wakana Aoi, this witty drama chronicles the journey of a self-indulgent family trying to stay alive in the wake of adversity.

The Suzuki’s live in Tokyo. By all appearances they’re a typical family. The patriarch, Yoshiyuki (Kohinata), is a diligent salaryman, mother Mitsue (Fukatsu) a full time housewife, son Kenji (Izumisawa) a sulky university student and daughter Yui (Aoi) a fussy teenager. They all live under the same roof, yet barely interact with one another.

Then one day the Suzuki’s encounter a crisis. On waking, they find all electrical appliances in their home have stopped working. Not only has their home been affected but all in the neighbourhood, along with transport, communication and utility systems.

With no option, the family must put up with the inconvenience but then another day passes, and another. What seemed like a simple power outage turns into something much more – a global blackout. With Tokyo at a standstill and social order breaking down, one family after another makes its escape. Deciding to join the exodus, the Suzuki’s set off on a long trip to Kagoshima with the hope of finding food and shelter along the way.
