Several years ago Finnish director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) started to helm Chinese-language films and, following Skiptrace and Legend of the Ancient Sword, Bodies at Rest is his third Chinese offering. With a nod to the Die Hard series, the retro Hong Kong-based thriller takes place on Christmas Eve and stars former police officer Nick Cheung (Beast Stalker, Nightfall), Richie Jen (Life Without Principle) and Yang Zi (Battle of Changsha).

A cat-and-mouse game unfolds during a single night when a group of armed criminals including Santa (Jen) barges into a Hong Kong mortuary demanding that forensic doctor Nick Chan (Cheung) and his assistant Lynn (Yang) hand over a bullet lodged inside a corpse. While the criminals are desperately trying to hide their true identities, the doctor finds himself sinking deeper and deeper into a quagmire as his past inadvertently catches up with him. Each explosive twist in the plot soon pushes the characters beyond their limits.
